Thunderwear Exhibition
Jon Stark, ‘Thunderwear Exhibition’, Press Release
arts.co.uk and The Portobello Gold are pleased to announce the
forthcoming exhibition of photographic work by international
photographer and artist, Jon Stark. His work has encompassed a wide
range of subject matter from opera, theatre, drag and go-go.
The pictures selected for this exhibition depict a range of performers
that combine sexuality and physicality to create an energy that has its
own dark humour, yet appealing aesthetic. The models in each case
represent the diverse nature of sexuality and appear to be laughing
back in the face of the viewer, ignoring any notions of objectivity and
basking in their own energy and appeal.
This body of work explores a kind of beauty that is unconventional but
very much there and finds a certain amount of common ground with past
masters such as Robert Mapplethorpe. Unlike Mapplethorpe’s reliance
upon very cold, calculated studio lighting, which leaves nothing to
chance, Stark’s strengths are that he operates in ambient lighting
conditions, capturing a moment as it happens and passes. There is in
this work the element of high-risk that is a by-product of spontaneity.
Stark takes great care with each image and has meticulously selected
which works should be in the show. He adds to the experience in
conversation by being anecdotal about the circumstance in which the
photographs were taken. Stark himself says: “I've spent twenty years
photographing people on stage. It's like being a wildlife photographer
in that you never know what to expect or when to expect it but you
better be ready for anything. I have come close to
injury...front-of-stage at rock-concerts and on-stage during dance
performances. Oh... and the odd performer lost in his or her aggressive
character, losing control and lashing out at the lens... like a caged
animal...”
The selection of the works can also be viewed online at www.arts.co.uk
in the run up to the opening. The works will be printed both by hand
on silver gelatin paper and reprinted in editions of 50 on resin coated
(rc) paper. Prices from £175 for reprints.
The exhibition opens at the Portobello Gold, 95/97 Portobello Road, Notting Hill, London, W11 2QB, historic bar and restaurant on Notting Hill’s Portobello Road, on the 22nd January and closes on the 22nd February. The preview will be on the 22nd January from 6pm until 8:30p.m.
