Zoe Hyde

Statement of work

My work captures fragments of experiences both from past and present. A narrative runs through the paintings, which brings memories, dreams, and moments in time together. I explore the juxtaposition between the beauty and excitement of life and its inherent fragility.

I am concerned with what lies beneath the surface and the indications that reveal what exists beyond the outward face. I mean this in a psychological sense and often show this by layering my work.

In some paintings layers are built up using childhood drawings, photographs, letters, doodles, words, maps, shopping lists. These images are painted over and I then scratch and even destroy the surface in an attempt to mark my existence at that moment.  Some work solely uses my childhood drawings and these may either be enlarged or repeated.

I allow the painting to build up a history of its own, its own autonomy and the final image is almost like a wall or landscape that has experienced the passing of time.
